Rainbow Moonstone is actually a form of Labradorite that exhibits a blue or multicolored adularescene on a light body colour. It is a member of the Feldspar group which makes up roughly 60% of the Earth's Crust. It originates in Australia, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, India and Mexico but now can be found all over the world. When the stones are mined, they are often polished so that the rainbow has a better chance of shining through.

These stones are often mistaken for Moonstone or thought to be in the same family, this is not the case. Moonstones are closer to Labradorite then it is to Rainbow Moonstone. One of the main differences is that this stone will often have traces of Black Tourmaline in, where as Moonstone does not.

Adularescence = The optical phenomenon often called the 'Moonstone Effect'. When cut as a cabochon, the appearance exhibits a reflective blue or white light as the stone is turned.
